The High Commissioner of Pakistan to Sri Lanka, retired Major General Faheem Ul Aziz, met with the Hon. Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, yesterday (28) at the Parliamentary premises. The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, was also present at the meeting.
During the discussions, High Commissioner, Faheem Ul Aziz conveyed an invitation from the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan for the Hon. Speaker of Sri Lanka to undertake an official visit to Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and tourism. The High Commissioner also underscored the significance of enhancing the existing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations to boost two-way trade.
Hon. Speaker, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s continued support to Sri Lanka at both bilateral and multilateral levels, including the discussions at the UN Human Rights Council. He also recalled his visit to Lahore to attend the 1st Joint CPA Asia & South-East Asia Regional Conference and conveyed his gratitude to the Government of Pakistan for its warm hospitality during the visit. Furthermore, the Speaker commended Pakistan’s commitment to preserving the sacred relics of Lord Buddha and its contributions to safeguarding Buddhist heritage.
The discussions also focused on reviving the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Association and exploring further avenues to strengthen cooperation between the two countries through MOUs.
