The Committee to preserve the valuable architecture in the Parliament complex met in Parliament recently (13) under the Chairmanship of the Secretary General of the Parliament Ms. Kushani Anusha Rohanadeera to review the progress.
Due to the cultural symbolism, landscaping and surroundings, historical context and national identity of the valuable architectural structures in the Parliament complex, this program was initiated due to the need to preserve them for future generations.
Representatives from Ministry of Buddhasasana Religious and Cultural Affairs, Department of Cultural Affairs, Department of National Archives, Department of National Museums, Central Cultural Fund, Department of Archeology, National Council of Arts, Department of Government Information, Ena de Silva Trust Fund, Geoffrey Bawa Trust Fund, National Crafts Council and Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board participated in this discussion.
The officials representing the Geoffrey Bawa Trust Fund explained the places and objects that need to be renovated in the Parliament according to the observations made so far.
Accordingly, preservation of the Parliament Building, the Mace, the Silver Door, the Copper Door, the Lion Gate, the Bar of the House, the 18 brass flags, the cluster lamp, the ceiling of the Chamber Hall, the ceiling in front of the Copper Door, the 18 ceremonial flags, line art, the wooden mural at the entrance of the members, the staff entrance murals, the conservation of paintings in the lobby, paintings in the private dining room of honorable members, portrait gallery on the second floor, photo gallery on the ground floor and other important photographs/paintings as well as the artefacts in the exhibition hall were discussed.
It was decided to meet again on October 14th to discuss the future program in this regard.
Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Chaminda Kularatne, Assistant Secretary General Mr. Hansa Abeyratne and Serjeant at Arms Mr. Kushan Jayaratne and Department Heads were present at this meeting.
